Writing the truth requires grit, authenticity, and a lively imagination. Often called “the fourth genre,” creative nonfiction is a rich way to imagine the truth.  Join author and teacher Jeff Davis in this course designed at once to introduce, immerse, and inspire writers in this exciting field. The eight-week course will afford writers the opportunity to develop, re-vision, and refine a nonfiction essay, a personal essay, or excerpt from a memoir.

* Gain an invaluable overview of this genre’s trends and the publications that will help you enter the dialogue of nonfiction. * Practice playing with the elements of strong fiction in non-fiction. * Create “experiential time and space” by crafting artful narrative & description and by playing with organic forms. * Navigate dark regions that make for authentic insight. * Integrate your knowledge of research, history, culture, & more.  * Become part of a thoughtful, intelligent writing group using a beneficial workshop method.  Sessions include brief & focused talks, provocative writing exercises, optional share & supportive "workshop" sessions, and the study of other essayists’ works. Optional out-of-session assignments will inspire writers to imagine, think, feel, and live as nonfiction writers.  Course outline available.

POSSIBLE TEXTS:
We may find it useful to have some of the following common texts to study nonfiction writing together:
*The Art of the Personal Essay (Ed., P. Lopate)--an excellent anthology of essays from the past two thousand years;
*Speak, Memory (Nabokov);
*The Journey from the Center to the Page (J. Davis).

We're reserving THE COLONY CAFE on Tuesday nights just for this course. This landmark cafeoffers us an ideal space to gather 'round round tables to explore ideas, discuss writing, and to learn together. It's located on Rock City Road--1/8 of a mile from the Woodstock Village Green.
