WONDERWRITINGS
Issue 1.4        Autumn-Winter 2005

a note from Jeff

Wonder merits attention. Our attempts to render wonder in words often snow cliche. We must, to remain authentic, stoke wonder with vigilance. Keeping watchful on the way thoughts fall in with words in certain set patterns lets a tiny ember or two catch a flame and melt the tried forms and rote responses.

We deemed 2005 as "The Year of Wonder," a year that birthed WonderWritings: the e-journal of simple awe. We've since had the honor to publish truly delightful, at times provocative writing from poets, fiction writers, fable writers, and essayists throughout the United States--writing that approaches wonder itself anew.

The Autumn-Winter issue is no exception.  In "Reconciliation," Connecticut poet Faith Vicinanza offers a stirring meditation upon a sister-brother connection. Wonder happens inthat soft moment of, if not plea for, reconciliation. And what about mother-son relationships?  The fact that a son turns 30 itself is enough to set a mother wondering, but the speaker in Connecticut poet Elizabeth Thomas's "My Son Turned 30 Today" explores that numinous affection a mother has for her child, affection her own mother rarely if ever expressed. This season also blankets us in dreams, and New York City writer Barbara Benedict's "House of Dreams" invites us to experience afresh this otherwise common province of wonder. Denise Kolanovic's poem "Mid Fall" rounds out this issue's focus, as her attention centers at once upon the thin distinctions between nature's language and a poet's language.

As always, we limit the number of writers we publish each issue to three to five, a policy that lets us keep each issue small and savory, but a policy nonetheless that means we must turn away numerous strong submissions by serious writers.  For all of those submissions, accepted or returned, we thank you.  We thank you, the readers, too, who support this work and who frequently send us words of appreciation.

A state of wonder can re-awaken us to this phenomenal, material world even in, if not especially during, adverse times. Not a literature of escape from the world, WonderWritings offers a literature of engagement with this world.

Call for Submissions: Three to five writers' work will be selected for the Autumn 2005 issue. Between July 15 and September 30, WonderWritings seeks innovative poems, essays, or fictional stories that explore the wonder of this physical world and physical existence. Tone and subject matter need not be uplifting or inspirational; in fact, a more inquistive tone may be more suitable. Preference given to works with qualities of an embodied style--sensual imagery, intimate detail, organic metaphor, musicality, complexity. It is not unusual for a writer to be asked to revise part of his or her work for re-consideration. All rights revert to the author. Artists with digital images of their work also may submit their work.

Sending Submissions: Send submissions to CenterToPage via email to wonder@centertopage.com or info@centertopage.com with "Wonder Writing Submission" in the subject box. We will respond within six weeks of receiving your submission.
